Cape Fear (1991)
My goodness, the remake of Cape Fear is not for the faint of heart. Trust me. I am quite faint of heart, and I had to frequently fast-forward the scariest parts of the movie. If you’re not sure if you can handle it, watch the original. It’s still pretty creepy, but it’s not half as gruesome.
Nick Nolte plays a successful attorney, and he has a stable home life with his beautiful wife Jessica Lange and innocent daughter Juliette Lewis. His perfection is about to get ruined when Robert DeNiro, a man he helped put behind bars, gets out of jail. This convict wants revenge, and he’s not afraid to torment everyone in the family to get it!
Seriously, even if the synopsis sounds good to you, I urge you to watch the original first. You’ll enjoy it and get it out of your system, and you won’t have to watch this version. Because if you watch this one, I guarantee you’ll be frightened of Robert DeNiro for the rest of your life. He’s insanely scary and disturbing.
If you do decide to watch this version, it’s probably because you’re a die-hard DeNiro fan, and maybe one of your favorite flicks is Taxi Driver or something utterly creepy. On the upside, Jessica Lange gives an excellent performance, and while Juliette Lewis isn’t the prettiest child in the world, you’ll be cringing in your seat when she unknowingly steps into the creepy convict’s trap. The best parts of the movie by far are the cameos from Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, and Martin Balsam, the stars in the original Cape Fear!
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to extremely frightening scenes and violence, I wouldn’t let my kids watch it. Also, there may or may not be a rape scene.
