Cash McCall (1960)
Don’t tell anyone, but I just couldn’t keep up with the film Cash McCall. To admit that a Natalie Wood movie was too complex for me is quite humiliating, but I just want to warn potential viewers who don’t feel like taking a course in finance. Natalie’s character is a total idiot, but James Garner and the fast-paced plot of the film carry only the best and brightest away with them.
From what I was able to gather, Jimmy stars as a ruthless businessman who buys businesses when they’re at their worst and sells them when they’re at their best. He’s intelligent, savvy, and a total success. Dean Jagger’s business is in dire straits, and Jimmy flies in to assess the damage and potentially buy it. He meets Dean’s airhead daughter, Natalie, and we’re supposed to think sparks fly between them. I couldn’t get past her embarrassing acting (constantly asking myself how bad the takes that didn’t make the final cut must have been) to even notice if the romance was worth rooting for. I do remember lots of silly 1960s scenes, which unfortunately helped to pigeonhole James Garner into a detached, semi-scoundrel who falls for a ditzy Doris Day type. Later in his career he showed audiences he could act in heavy dramas, but you’d never guess it from seeing his early work.
