Cheers for Miss Bishop (1941)
Fans of The Blue Veil, Good Morning Miss Dove, and Sister Kenny will love Cheers for Miss Bishop, a touching drama about a woman who devotes her life to serving others. Martha Scott takes the lead in a perfect Bette Davis role: a sweet, innocent girl with a bright future whose happiness gets stolen from her. She starts off as a bright youth who loves education and wants to be a teacher. Her fiancé supposedly adores and supports her, until he leaves her for her silly and seductive young cousin. With tearful eyes and a strong spine, Martha continues her career and becomes an old maid school teacher under the mentorship of Edmund Gwenn. She finds great fulfillment in shaping the minds of her students, but her heart longs for love and a family.
If you like tearjerker stories like The Old Maid, find yourself a copy of this two-hankie flick and be sure to stock up on your Kleenex. It’s not as famous as any of the Bette Davis dramas, but it has a very strong story that will touch anyone who’s suffered unfairly or sacrificed their passion for the greater good. Martha Scott ages well as the decades pass, and it feels like you’ve really seen her through life’s challenges. I’d love to get my hands on the original novel, to read even more detail.
