Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)
I’ve never met anyone who didn’t watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at least a dozen times when they grew up, but in case you have, insist that they complete their childhood and rent it right away. What an adorable Disney flick, and who wouldn’t want a flying car? These days everyone attributes the flying car to Harry Potter; but Disney did it first, you know.
This movie really has every element that will appeal to kids: catchy songs, a make-believe premise, a goofy father figure they can really trust, and funny names. Baron Bomburst, Grandpa Potts, and Truly Scrumptious will make the children giggle upon introduction, before they even do anything funny. Since it is based on a Roald Dahl story, there is a bit of strangeness to it, but just remember that in a Disney movie, no kid stays kidnapped (especially in make-believe land), so everything will be okay.
You’re probably already singing the title song in your head, aren’t you, and wondering how many years it’s been since you watched the movie? With all the sweet Sherman and Sherman songs, the adorable Dick Van Dyke touching your heart, and the magic of a flying car and a faraway land, it surely can’t hurt to watch it again. Borrow your niece and nephew if you feel silly watching it alone, and you’ll all have a good time!
