Cold Turkey (1971)
A movie that could never be remade today, Cold Turkey tackles the taboo subject of smoking. Once upon a time, everybody smoked. In 1971, it was still considered funny to talk about how good it felt to smoke and how difficult it was to quit smoking. The premise of this comedy is that a tobacco company sponsors a “quit smoking” campaign, offering millions of dollars to a town who can get its residents to successfully quit for thirty days.
Dick Van Dyke is a respected reverend in a small town that reluctantly enters the contest. He’s confident his followers can last thirty days, but they protest. Since he’s a non-smoker, he doesn’t understand the sacrifice he’s asking of them. He strikes a bargain: until the contest starts, he’ll smoke like a chimney. That way, they’ll all be in it together! It’s a very funny sequence the night before the contest start, when everyone treasures their last cigarettes and stares at the ticking clock with dismay. As withdrawals kick in, the movie gets even funnier. Tempers flare, cheats are attempted, and any substitute is sought – any substitute. Chewing pens, fingering carrot sticks, and using physical exertion as a distraction.
Those who grew up watching Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang might have missed this one, since it contains humor more for adults than for five-year-olds. I mean, are kids really prepared to see Bert taking his oral fixation out on his wife? I found him very convincing, so give him a chance and see what you think!
