Come Live with Me (1941)
Can you picture the elegant Hedy Lamarr paired up with the awkward James Stewart? If not, you’ll have to rent Come Live with Me to believe it. It’s one of those silly comedies that marked the early years in Jimmy’s career. After he’d just won an Oscar for The Philadelphia Story, what do you expect?
The plot of this one isn’t exactly dated, since The Proposal was a modern successful comedy with a similar theme. Hedy Lamarr is Viennese in America with a soon-to-be expired Visa. The obvious solution (because she doesn’t want to go back to Nazi-occupied Austria) for her is to get married. But the problem is her boyfriend, Ian Hunter, is already married! So she meets James Stewart, a bumbling, accident-prone, loser, and asks him to marry her in name only. Do you think they’ll fall in love while pretending?
Really, unless you like silly screwball comedies, you can skip this one. Hedy doesn’t really excel in comedies, and Jimmy’s persona is pretty irritating.
