Convicted (1950)
In Convicted, Broderick Crawford plays a prison warden extremely sympathetic to the prisoners he guards. Before his work took him to the prison, he was a district attorney who saw firsthand how innocent men sometimes got convicted. When a man he knows got the short end of the stick winds up serving time in his prison, he does everything he can to help him. However, when is enough enough?
Alright, that last sentence was my own take on the story. Glenn Ford may be innocent, but I still think Broderick was too lenient. He makes Glenn a trustee and sends him on errands to his home, allowing his daughter, Dorothy Malone, to fall in love with him. I’ll never understand why Broderick allows his daughter to have contact with the prisoners. Even with respect for the men he’s helping to reform, and trust that they’ll leave her alone, it’s basic human nature. You take a handful of men who have been locked up in cages for years and a scrumptious, friendly young lady, and there’s going to be hormone-induced trouble.
Still, if the premise sounds good to you and you like the cast, you can check it out. Millard Mitchell, Carl Benton Reid, Ed Begley, Whit Bissell (in yet another prison movie!), Will Geer, Henry O’Neill, and Frank Faylen are all faces you’ll recognize in the supporting cast. It does have an interesting story, but it’s not as gruesome as a lot of other prison movies. Just know it’s a silver screen flick about an innocent man who gets put in circumstances he never expected.
