Cowboy (1958)
I had to see it to believe it: Jack Lemmon in a western. In this mentor-buddy flick, Jack plays a total dandy who wants to experience the Wild West with a real, rugged cowboy Glenn Ford. This may be a pre-cursor to City Slickers, but it’s not one one-hundredth as good. If you do decide to rent it, lower your expectations.
Jack Lemmon is wholly unlikable. He’s mean, selfish, and spoiled for the vast majority of the movie. Glenn Ford is miscast. I know he made a ton of westerns throughout his career, but he just doesn’t come across as rugged or tough to me. He seems like he wouldn’t know the first thing about the great outdoors. The mentor role should have been played by someone who either was extremely tough, known for playing cowboy roles, or preferably both. Randolph Scott, John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Joel McCrea, Van Heflin, Richard Boone all would have been better choices. If you love Glenn Ford in westerns, you’ll probably like this movie better than I did.
