Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
If you love campy old horror flicks, you’ve probably seen Creature from the Black Lagoon a hundred times. I’d only watched it for the first time recently, and thankfully, it wasn’t scary. I am such a lightweight when it comes to scary movies! This one is just cheesy, so even young kids can enjoy it.
Both you and your sweetie-pie can find plenty of eye candy to get you through the corny horror flick. Both Julie Adams and Richard Carlson have great bods and are constantly parading around in their swimsuits, even when it’s clearly not necessary (and let’s not forget about Richard Denning!). I’m sure Richard had a blast making this campy movie; he never got to show some skin! I thought he was handsome before, but this movie puts him in a whole new light. He’s got a better behind than Gene Kelly!
Unfortunately, instead of just being an old staple from the 1950s, this movie has a very unpleasant association for me. The creator of The Shape of Water stated in interviews that he based his movie on Creature from the Black Lagoon. When he watched the movie growing up, he believed it was a love story between Julie and the creature—and he felt sorry that Richard tried to rescue his own fiancé! To me, that shows mental instability. I find it intensely disturbing that he never grew out of that belief and made an entire movie “righting the wrong” so that the woman could have a sick, interspecies relationship with the creature. Had he tried to do that thirty years ago, he would have been locked up in a mental institution. Does no one else think there’s something wrong with modern times?
