Criss Cross (1949)
Fresh off the success of 1946’s The Killers, which was Burt Lancaster’s debut film, Burt and director Robert Siodmak reunited to make Criss Cross, another noir thriller. In this one, Burt is consumed with love for Yvonne DeCarlo, his ex-wife. Little does he know, she’s become involved with dangerous Los Angeles mobsters, Dan Duryea and Steven McNally, and her affection for him might not be genuine. . .
If you like old noir thrillers, feel free to rent this one on a rainy afternoon. It’s not as famous as Double Indemnity or Humphrey Bogart’s detective movies, but it’s pretty good. Without Burt Lancaster, it probably wouldn’t be remembered at all, though. He’s such a powerhouse force and brings the film to life with his energy. The plot is exciting enough, but it’s easy to imagine if the lead were George Raft or Gary Cooper, the story would be pretty boring. No offense, George and Gary.
