Cromwell (1970)
English audiences probably loved the period epic Cromwell. It tells an important part of their country’s history, with battle scenes and Parliamentary speeches galore. But for us Yanks, the cultural differences make it less interesting.
It’s a great titular role for Richard Harris, who gets to shout himself hoarse during his passionate monologues. If you’re a fan of his, you’ll want to check this out. If you generally see his movies and ask, “Why wasn’t this Richard Burton?” you probably won’t like it. I’ve recently watched a big batch of his films to celebrate his time as Star of the Week, and I’ve grown so much more respect for his acting. He has a great range, and even though many of the friends’ roles could be looked at as interchangeable (Harris could have easily starred in Look Back in Anger, Anne of the Thousand Days, and The Night of the Iguana; Burton could have played Cromwell, The Molly Maguires, and was Harris’s predecessor onstage in Camelot), if you’ve grown to like him, you can really appreciate what he brings to the screen.
That being said, this movie isn’t my favorite of his. It’s very long, and a lot went into the production, but I managed to find it both tedious and confusing. I’m sure, though, that if I were raised as part of the Commonwealth, I would have loved it. You’ll see costumes and beautiful period sets, as well as long war scenes, and the famous monologue towards the end is well worth the wait. You’ll also see Alec Guinness, Robert Morley, Timothy Dalton, Michael Jayston, and Frank Finlay in the supporting cast.
