Crown for Christmas (2015)
If you liked Christmas at the Palace, you’ll love Crown for Christmas. With an almost identical plot, it’s a classic rags-to-royalty romance for a Hallmark Christmas delight. Unless, you’re like me; then you won’t like it. I don’t like the rags-to-royalty plot. I prefer royal princes to marry royal princesses. I don’t find it romantic when a classy gentleman gets “brought down to Earth” by a commoner; I think it means he has bad judgement and short-sightedness.
But if you aren’t like me, you might like this and other Hallmark royalty Christmas movies. From the world of “every woman’s fantasy” comes the premise: a hotel maid gets fired for incompetence, and immediately gets hired to work in a royal palace and gets whisked away to a beautiful place and falls in love with a young, handsome prince. The prince, Rupert Penry-Jones, also has a ready-made-family (a recent trend in Hallmark love stories) and a sorrowful heart (another trend) for her to step in and heal. His daughter is a real pill who enjoys scaring off her governesses, but of course when Danica McKellar comes to town, she’s met her match. Common sense comes to the palace once again, ladies and gentlemen. Sometimes a great movie can change your mind about a tired genre, but unfortunately, this one isn’t it.
