Dark Harbor (1998)
What a thriller! I’m a sucker to watch almost anything starring Alan Rickman—the exception being Perfume--so I was very excited to rent this romantic thriller costarring Polly Walker. They’re a married couple experiencing the seven year itch, and to help rejuvenate their marriage, they plan a weekend getaway to their lake cabin. On the way, they come across an injured young man on the side of the road, and they take him home to help him recover. Before long, Norman Reedus overstays his welcome, worms his way into their lives, and creates even more trouble in their marriage.
Well-acted, well-written, and well-directed, this is a very fun flick unique to the 1990s. It’s not riddled with gratuitous sex scenes, it’s not flashy, it’s not gruesome, it’s not told in flashbacks—everything’s told in its proper time and order. I like ’90s thrillers far better than ones made today, so if you agree, find a copy of this lesser-known flick. I’ve already seen it twice! With a twist you’ll never see coming, this is a great movie to watch with a bunch of girlfriends on a rainy girls’ night. You can watch it on date night with your sweetie-pie if you want to, but it’s not a great choice if you’ve just started dating.
