Dark Hazard (1934)
If you’re an Edward G. Robinson fan, find a copy of Dark Hazard. It’s a bit obscure and not his usual fare, but it’ll definitely be worth it. He plays a gambler, but not his usual gangster character. In this drama, he has a whirlwind courtship (which you’d expect from a gambler’s personality) but his addiction causes problems in his new, stable life.
The reason this movie is so special is because of the naughty bits. Edward G. Robinson’s screen persona isn’t one with an active sex life, but he surprises us all in Dark Hazard. Not only is it a shock to see Eddie G rattling off such nasty lines, but it would be a shock to hear anyone saying them! This pre-Code script is so incredibly risqué! Not only does Eddie G have a serious problem keeping his hands off his wife, Genevieve Tobin, but he even sneaks in a pat on her rear as she insists they take their kissing session inside, lest the neighbors think they’re too amorous to be a married couple.
When temptation calls, Eddie G finds himself in the bedroom of old girlfriend Glenda Farrell. She’s in a slinky nightgown, and when her advances aren’t returned, she insults him by ordering him a wheelchair instead of a taxi. “Well, it was the first time I ever disappointed you,” Eddie G says before leaving her bedroom. How nasty! Check this movie out to see a new side of your favorite gangster.
