Dead Certain
by Adam Mitzner
I loved the premise of Dead Certain. A woman drops off the first half of her unpublished manuscript to her sister then disappears. In the manuscript, she’s written a fictionalized account of her own murder with different boyfriends as suspects; can her lawyer sister figure out the truth before it’s too late? Dead Certain includes passages of the sister’s novel, and it’s so much fun to read and try to piece together the mystery alongside the main character. The author himself is a practicing attorney, and you feel like you’re getting an education just from reading all the technicalities in his book. This is not your average “airplane” thriller. If you’re not an intelligent reader paying attention, you’ll miss quite a bit.
I loved how Dead Certain turned out. The characters are interesting and consistent, making me want to read more about them – and the good news is I can (and already have)! Adam Mitzner has written two more books in the series with the same characters, and they’re both just as entertaining and educational. It’s such a breath of fresh air to read intelligent writing that doesn’t pander to the lowest common denominator. Mitzner has a brilliant mind, and he doesn’t care about scaring anyone off. If you’re not smart enough to keep up with him, stick to The Girl on the Train.
