Dealing with Dragons
by Patricia C. Wrede
Even though I’m not anywhere near the target age group for this delightful dragon series, I was hooked in by the first pages of Patricia C. Wrede’s book Dealing with Dragons. It was charming, funny, original, intelligent, and intriguing. Imagine a princess hoping to get captured by a dragon to avoid an engagement with a prince!
It turns out, not all dragons are the evil villains feared by the royals and villagers in fairytale land. Some are kind and funny, and they appreciate the work the princesses do for them. The heroine in the story enjoys cooking, cleaning, planning dinner parties for other dragons, and organizing the library and treasure-filled caves of her new dwelling. It’s such a cute story, that I imagine any girl who loves fairy tales (whether or not she’s a feminist who doesn’t want to grow up to be a princess herself) will adore these books. I can’t wait for the next one!
