Death at a Funeral (2010)
Having seen both the original and the remake, I’d recommend the American version. Unless, of course, you’re British. But for us Yankees, the humor in the remake is far more accessible. The plot points in both movies are pretty identical, but in the remake, we see a host of familiar faces and the timing and delivery of the jokes are in a style we can better relate to.
There are two types of funerals: the ones where everything goes according to plan because there are only two or three people in attendance, and the ones where everything goes wrong. When you gather lots of relatives together, it’s only natural that people don’t get along. Petty squabbles don’t usually get put on hold just because there’s a death in the family. So, while grief is supposed to be focal point, this realistic comedy proves that selfishness will always float to the top. From the small, like bickering over a parking place, to the deep, like rival brothers who vie for importance, there’s never a dull moment at this funeral.
With a cast of Loretta Devine, Martin Lawrence, Chris Rock, Danny Glover, Zoe Saldana, Regina Hall, James Marsden, Tracy Morgan, Luke Wilson, Keith David, Ron Glass, Columbus Short, Kevin Hart, and Peter Dinklage, this hilarious flick makes light of what is usually a very sad situation. If you like movies like that, it’ll be right up your alley.
