Dial M for Murder (1954)
If you’ve read my reviews, you know that I’m usually critical of Alfred Hitchcock movies, claiming they’re slow and boring. Dial M for Murder is an exception, and next to Jamaica Inn, it might be my favorite of his movies!
Grace Kelly, a classic icy blonde of the Hitchcock movies, plays the unhappy wife of Ray Milland. I usually call him “Ray Mi-bland” but in this movie he’s pretty exciting. He knows Grace is cheating on him, and he’s going to do something about it. He’s planned out all the details of a perfect murder, including an alibi for himself and an untraceable link between himself and the murderer. However, since this is a Hitchcock movie, you can be pretty sure something’s going to go wrong. Otherwise it would be a very short movie.
I’m not a Robert Cummings fan, and I just don’t understand why Grace would cheat on Ray Mi-bland with someone so seemingly insincere. Ray’s too good-looking for the part. If she’s so terribly unhappy and seeks solace in her husband’s friend, she should have had a better reason. This movie never gives a reason, so we should at least see she’s not attracted to her husband.
After you’ve seen this classic, check out the remake, A Perfect Murder. There are so many more twists and turns in the modern update, so make sure you watch this one first so you can give it its due.
