Doctor Strange (2018)
I went into Doctor Strange knowing absolutely nothing about it, except that my sister-in-law is in love with Benedict Cumberbatch. I’ve only seen him in a couple of movies, where he plays a bad guy alien, and a hick who wanted to sleep with his sister. Needless to say, I was very impressed with his versatility in this movie.
For real comic book fans, Doctor Strange will probably be a treat. The special effects rival Inception, and the second half is pretty much one non-stop action sequence. I didn’t exactly know what kind of movie I was getting into, but while I didn’t end up liking it, I totally understand why others did. The ever-changing backgrounds and magical portals weren’t the types of visuals to capture my attention, and in fact, once the origin story had ended, I was pretty bored. I didn’t actually realize the beginning was an origin story, so I was surprised when all the magic spells showed up. I found the beginning fascinating, and had the entire movie been about a brilliant surgeon who can no longer use his hands, I probably would have been riveted.
Technically, that is what it’s about, but you know what I mean. I don’t think I’ll rent the sequel, but I’m happy for (Eggs) Benedict, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Benedict Wong that it was so successful. I’m also happy for my sister-in-law that Eggs keeps cranking out more movies.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie will not be your friend. There are tons of spinning camera movements throughout the entire movie, and they will make you very sick. In other words, "Don't Look, Mom!"
