Donovan's Reef (1963)
I’ve heard good things about Donovan’s Reef, but when I finally got around to renting it, I was a little disappointed. I thought it was a satire about relaxed island life versus western societal values, but that wasn’t really the message. Instead, it’s pretty much a romantic comedy with a few drunken brawls thrown in – because Lee Marvin has to have something to do.
John Wayne, Jack Warden, and Cesar Romero live contentedly on a South Pacific island with the native villagers. Lee Marvin joins them, with a love-hate relationship with John Wayne. When Jack Warden’s distant Boston relative dies, he’s left an inheritance with a condition: if he’s proven to be immoral, he doesn’t inherit. So, living on a savage island with three children borne to him by a native woman (now deceased), can prove he’s immoral. When his grown-up daughter from his first marriage, Elizabeth Allen, comes to the island to investigate, John Wayne pretends the three kids are his kids instead.
Elizabeth and John hate each other at first sight, and they have all the normal ridiculous fights and misunderstandings that prove to the audience that they’ll certainly fall in love by the end of the movie. Meanwhile, Cesar Romero plans on ditching his mistress Dorothy Lamour (who looks exactly the same after all these years!) for the proper Elizabeth. For no good reason, Elizabeth isn’t interested. And Lee Marvin causes needless bar brawls that do nothing but waste screen time and bore the audience. Besides hearing nice Hawaiian music in the background and seeing some beautiful Kauai scenery, I can’t mention anything positive about the movie. It’s far too silly for my taste.
