Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love the Bomb (1997)
“Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here; this is the war room!”
So goes the famous line in Dr. Strangelove, and so goes the chuckle amongst the cynical members of the audience. I know Dr. Strangelove is a wacky classic from the 1960s, but I didn’t laugh once, and I never wanted to give it a second chance. I find it in poor taste to make a war comedy, so whoever takes on such a task had better be the best screenwriter in the world. War isn’t funny. One of the only war comedies I enjoyed was Advance to the Rear, and I probably appreciated the humor so much because it took place during the Civil War and didn’t hit so close to home. Making fun of the Cold War or the Vietnam War is very tricky, since so many people still remember those eras.
Tons of people love this Stanley Kubrick classic, but if you haven’t seen it yet, just know that it uses a particular brand of humor. It’s very cynical, tongue-in-cheek, and 1960s. A good rule of thumb is if you enjoyed M*A*S*H, you’ll find this very funny. You’ll see a big cast, including Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, Keenan Wynn, Peter Sellers, Sterling Hayden, Slim Pickens, James Earl Jones, and Peter Sellers.
