Dragonwyck (1946)
The tagline to Dragonwyck should be, “We can make our own Jane Eyre without you, Orson Welles!” If you’re not in the mood for that, rent something else tonight.
If you are in the mood for that, you’ll at least get some eye candy from the beautiful Gene Tierney, who could never have been cast as the homely governess written by Bronte. She plays an excitable farmgirl raised by the pious Walter Huston and the useful Anne Revere. When an offer from a distant cousin presents itself, she takes full advantage, moving to the estate Dragonwyck to better herself. Unfortunately, her cousin and head of the manor is Vincent Price, and he’s exceedingly creepy. Gene can’t tell, though, and she believes he’s good and true, even though the audience can see he ignores his daughter, Connie Marshall, and detests his wife, Vivienne Osborne.
To me, Gene’s character is written to be so unlikable, it’s impossible to root for her in this movie. She’s too emotional and flies off the handle in public, which just wasn’t done in the 1800s. Also, she’s an idiot with bad judgment. It’s no wonder the townsfolk don’t take to her, when she acts snobbish about being a farmer’s daughter and speaks to people without an introduction. If you’re interested in a Jane Eyre knockoff, go ahead, but it’s not very good.
