Eliza Fraser (1976)
The rousing Tom Jones-esque music of Bruce Smeaton’s Eliza Fraser will have you in the mood for another English period piece with heaving bodices and over-the-top adventures. Susannah York stars as the titular character, a beautiful woman married to an older man she no longer fancies, Noel Ferrier. Both John Waters and John Castle are enamored with her, and it’s quite the comedy of errors as to how she ends up as the tip of their love triangle.
Usually in these types of amorous period pieces, the plot is very silly. This movie is no exception In fact, Susannah and Noel find themselves shipwrecked and captured by native Aborigines in Australia. This part of the story went on far too long for my taste. Personally, I liked The Amorous Adventures of Moss Flanders better, but to each his own. I also didn’t care for Tom Jones, so take my recommendation with a grain of salt.
