Executive Action (1973)
Robert Ryan was ailing and didn’t make it another year, but I don’t know how the other stars and filmmakers of Executive Action had the guts to attach their names and faces to the project. Will Geer went completely against type, and Burt Lancaster risked ending his good-guy standing forever. At the time, it was understandably a total bomb. Now, it’s forgotten completely; Oliver Stone has been given total credit for coming up with an alternate theory of the JFK assassination.
Preceding his film by twenty years, this thorough, frightening, and gripping drama offers chilling facts that had been (and continue to be) covered up about the events of 1963. This movie is extremely upsetting to watch, and in fact, some viewers might not be able to get through it. It does show the assassination footage, and it does lay out for the audience the step-by-step organization of who plotted the assassination and how it was practiced, carried out, and covered up. The story is told from the point of view of the conspirators. Burt, Ryan, and Will are the bad guys, and it feels terrible to watch them that way. If you can make it through, this movie will give you chills and turn upside down everything you thought was true before. There’s a French version that’s so similar it’s almost a remake, if you’re interested, starring Yves Montand: I…For Icharus.
