Fate Is the Hunter (1964)
The beginning of Fate Is the Hunter is very exciting, and I was on the edge of my seat thinking I’d be in for a real treat. I completely see why Glenn Ford agreed to make the movie, and why Nancy Kwan signed up for second billing. But as the drama pushed on, the “drama” grew thinner. And poor Nancy Kwan, who was on top of the world three years prior, was given practically a bit part.
Before the credits roll, we see handsome airline pilot Rod Taylor flying a commercial plane. It’s like a disaster movie, but as soon as the movie starts: both engines fail and he has to try to land the plane! While investigating the mechanical difficulties of what happened to the plane, Rod’s friend Glenn Ford is on the board of inquiries. He just can’t figure out whether it was a technical error or if Rod made a mistake, so he does some digging on his own. He meets Nancy, who plays Rod’s oddball girlfriend, and she suggests maybe the accident was fate. What a kook! Susanne Pleshette, a stewardess on Rod’s plane, has a much bigger part than Nancy does, but she mostly does a lot of crying and whining.
Basically, it’s a really interesting premise, and after the beginning, it’s impossible to turn the movie off. But I wish the message of the movie was different, and I wish that Nancy had been given a bigger part, or at least some acting to do.
