Flying Down to Rio (1933)
“Oh Rio, Rio by the sea-o. . .”
Even though everyone now knows Flying Down to Rio as the first of the Astaire & Rogers musicals, they’re hardly in it. The main storyline isn’t about them. Gene Raymond plays a composer with a traveling band who constantly flirts with women. While in Florida, he meets the seductive Dolores Del Rio and he thinks it’s really love this time. However, she’s already engaged, and while her fiancé tries to keep them apart, Gene follows them to Rio to try to woo her.
Where do Fred and Ginger come in? Fred is the bandleader (named Fred) and Ginger is their singer (whose name is another distinctive flavor: Honey). They bicker and dance and support the leads, because that’s what supporting characters do. They join forces in the lengthy number “The Carioca”, but although it is great fun to see their first dance, it’s not the greatest movie they made together. Stick with Swing Time and Top Hat for start-to-finish enjoyable flicks.
