Follow Me Quietly (1949)
You probably haven’t heard of the obscure oldie Follow Me Quietly, but if you like serial killer flicks with dedicated cops at the helm, you might want to rent it. You’ve got to watch it on a rainy evening, though, since the killer only strikes during that type of weather. Even though this movie is a B-picture, there are a couple of moments that are extremely creepy. Even for today’s standards, there’s one scene in particular (no spoilers here) that is guaranteed to give you shivers.
Dorothy Patrick is a magazine writer desperate for a scoop to elevate her status. She wants to talk to the detective in charge of finding the murderer “The Judge”, but he won’t give any details. William Lundigan and Jeff Corey are the buddy cops who try to make sense of the very little clues they have to go on: a hat, cigarette butt, a blue suit, and a penchant for rain. There are a few sparks between Dorothy and William, and she uses them to her advantage. She dresses in a low-cut black number and shows up at his apartment for a nightcap, hoping he’ll soften up and let her in on an exclusive interview. With a very mysterious and elusive killer at large, will he really have romance on his mind?
This movie really isn’t bad. If it was an Otto Preminger movie starring Dana Andrews and Lizabeth Scott, it might have been remembered today. As it is, there aren’t any bad performances, and everyone acts very professional in front of the camera. You can tell the character actors like Jeff are old pros who consistently delivered during every take, and there’s no reason the new ones trying to make it big didn’t become headliners. If you like the genre, give it a chance. It’s not as creepy as The Boston Strangler, but it’s eerie enough.
