Foul Play (1978)
Foul Play is a cute tongue-in-cheek thriller, but there are parts that won’t really stand the test of time. There’s an entire sequence where the audience is supposed to laugh at a little person Goldie fears is a mobster. Japanese tourists are also made fun of, and the plotline involving the pope might not go over well with some viewers. However, if you love Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase’s chemistry, you’ll probably enjoy this classic comedy. Am I the only person, though, who felt Goldie was miscast as an introverted librarian?
The basic plot is funny, though: Goldie accidentally becomes a target, and she doesn’t know who to trust besides her landlord Burgess Meredith and two nice cops, Chevy and Brian Dennehy. While they all try to figure out the mystery and remain alive, she and Chevy fall in love. In one of the funny moments, Burgess has a physically exerting kung-fu fight with Rachel Roberts. But without a doubt, Dudley Moore steals the show as Goldie’s one-night stand she picks up in a bar. She’s just seeking sanctuary, and he thinks she’s looking for a good time. So, while she hides behind the window curtain, afraid for her life, he turns on the disco music, does a striptease, and lets loose with all the sex toys hidden away in his closet.
Goldie Hawn is very cute in this movie, and obviously writer-director Colin Higgins thought so too; nearly every scene shows off her figure with tight clothes or “convenient” camera angles. If you’re a fan of hers, you can check out this oldie. Next up, see her at her absolute cutest in The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. During the car chase in the end, there are a couple of camera swerves, and that will make you sick. In other words, "Don't Look, Mom!"
