Free Birds (2013)
Does this sound like a Thanksgiving movie children will love: turkeys go back in time to save their species from November feasts? As a vegetarian who has never tried even one bite of turkey, I really wasn’t the target audience for this cartoon. Obviously, my family has no problem eating an alternative meal for Thanksgiving – and one that doesn’t include a “tofu turkey” in its place. Our table has always been full of delectable autumn “side dishes”, and the guests who join us sometimes forget to ask about the bird.
That being said, I actually did go to see Free Birds in the theaters on Thanksgiving. It was pretty cute, but a little more action-packed than I would have liked if I’d been a little girl. As a grown-up, I could laugh at the adult humor and appreciate Woody Harrelson’s “tough bird” and Owen Wilson’s “turkey with his head cut off” performances. I always find stories interesting that include a time machine, and since I truly believe everyone (people, turkeys, and planet) would be better off if Thanksgiving only included vegetables at the table, I was rooting for Woody and Owen’s mission to succeed.
