From Time to Time (2009)
It’s another Julian Fellowes creation – that means it’s going to star Maggie Smith, right? Right! And you’ll also see Hugh Bonneville and Alan Leech from Downton Abbey, too. In From Time To Time, a young boy, Alex Etel, visits his Grandma Maggie’s large English estate and finds out he can time travel to a hundred years in the past. This is already a period piece, set during WWII, so he goes to the early 1800s during his nightly jaunts. When Alex first starts traveling back in time, he gets little pieces of the estate’s history and his ancestors. He asks his grandmother and the present-day groundskeeper, Timothy Spall, about it but they don’t have all the information. The only solution is for Alex to keep time-traveling and paying attention. Everything changes when the ghosts start to talk to him!
Even though this is a story starring a child, the ghosts and mysteries are a little spooky. Add in the overwhelming theme that Alex’s dad is missing in action and the tone of this movie is not exactly for kids. For grown-ups, it’s very intriguing and entertaining. Pop this one in right around Halloween time and light the candles.
