Get Out Your Handkerchiefs/ Préparez vos mouchoirs (1978)
I have no idea why this movie won the Best Foreign Film Academy Award of 1978. It’s so weird! Who thought of it? Who put up the money for it? Who watched it and thought it was fantastic? Obviously, you can find answers to those three questions if you really want to.
In this extremely strange, absurd pseudo-romance, one woman’s ambivalence to life becomes the obsession of every man who meets her. Her husband, Gérard Depardieu, can’t stand her long face and lack of emotion about anything, so he decides a love affair will fix the situation and picks out a suitable young man at a random table in a restaurant.
The unsuspecting, sweet, bespectacled Patrick Dewaere gets drawn into Carole Laure’s mess. He can’t make her smile, despite his efforts to get her to listen to Mozart’s records (which he feels can bring passion into anyone’s life), and he joins Gérard in the quest to help her. Why don’t they just drop her off at a clinic or sign her up for therapy? Together, in their matching sweaters and feeling of joint husbandry, they continue to devote their lives to Carole’s ups and downs (or downs and further-downs). Carole finds the answer on her own, in the form of a thirteen-year-old misfit kid at a summer camp.
Yes, this is as disgusting as it sounds. There might be someone out there who considers pedophilia a suitable subject for a romantic comedy, but that’s not my opinion. Had I known then what I know now, I wouldn’t have watched it.
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to sexual content involving a child, I wouldn't let my kids watch it.
