Get Over It (2001)
You’re going to be hard-pressed to find a movie where Ben Foster is the good guy. Watching this movie now, after he’s had a career full of despicable villains, it’s hard to believe he’s just playing an innocent teenager acting in the school play. But in Get Over It, he plays a young high schooler who gets his heart broken when he gets dumped. His pals repeat the movie’s title to him, but he just can’t take their advice. In fact, when his ex-girlfriend joins the cast of the school play, he auditions just to spend more time with her.
Also in the cast is Kirsten Dunst, his best friend’s sister. Kirsten gets to sing a cute song in the show that helps make Shakespeare more accessible to young kids. She’s the only reason I even know the line “To sleep, perchance to dream.” She’s a very nice girl, and she’s gentler with Ben than the others. She tries to help him get over his ex while encouraging self-confidence and self-care – and in the meantime, attraction between them grows. During this time period, there was a string of teen movies mirroring Shakespearean stories, and this one shows a glimmer of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Don’t worry if you don’t really get the connection (besides the school production in the movie); besides the lead needing to fall in love with another girl to get his mind off the original girl, there’s not much of a similarity. Don’t expect another 10 Things I Hate About You.
