Ghost Story (1981)
Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and John Houseman play four old fellows who gather together on gloomy nights and tell ghost stories around the fireplace. They’ve been friends for decades, but beneath their friendship, there’s a terrible secret they’ve all been keeping. Naturally, since this is a horror movie, one of their boys’ nights leads to scary things and a rehash of what really happened all those years ago.
I have to think that the leads’ grandsons made this movie as a college project, and being the softies that they were, they agreed to lend their star power to help. If that wasn’t the case, and they actually thought it was a good idea to make this movie, then it’s no wonder three of the four made it their last. After watching the finished product (or even the dailies), Fred, Mel, and Doug probably made a pact to never make another film.
Seriously, folks. This is very sad to watch. Save yourself and remember the three gents as they were fifty years earlier. Mel had a prolific career as an older man, so you can watch him in far better quality films. Pick one where Fred doesn’t look like he’s in pain and has trouble keeping his balance.
