G.I. Jane (1997)
Since I am one of the most non-feminist women you’ll ever come across and I still love G.I. Jane, it’s quite a compliment. I always appreciate well-done military movies, and this one has an interesting story, regardless of the feminist aspect. If it were G.I. Joe, I’d still enjoy it just as much. If you do like women empowerment movies, you’ll absolutely love this one.
Demi Moore stars as the first female recruit in a Navy SEAL-ish program. In the movie, the Navy has been criticized for sexism, and to prove they don’t harbor discrimination, they allow one woman into the training. Anne Bancroft plays the senator responsible for the inclusion, and she handpicks Demi as the one woman to enter the den of wolves. The drill sergeant, Viggo Mortensen, is against the experiment. He doesn’t want to be forced to change the program to accommodate someone who doesn’t belong there, and he’s particularly strict with Demi. She faces all the usual obstacles you’d expect from a 1990s military movie. Thankfully, this movie doesn’t have the uncomfortable grittiness of today’s films. You’ll also see a classic ’90s montage of one-armed pushups and oiled up abdominals, but it’s very fun. Without a ’90s montage, it wouldn’t be a ’90s classic! If you haven’t seen this Demi Moore staple, rent it with a bunch of your girlfriends this weekend. My roommate and I rented it in college during movie night, and we had a blast.
