Gilda (1946)
Gilda is a real classic, so if you’ve never seen it, you’ll probably want to rent it. Gents, you’ll probably develop a lifelong crush on Rita Hayworth for her iconic role as the sleazy, slutty nightclub singer who drives Glenn Ford insane with passion. Just as Lana Turner corrupted John Garfield in The Postman Always Rings Twice, Rita’s no-good heart doesn’t seem to matter. Glenn sees her flowing hair, her satisfied grin, and her dress that always seems to be one movement shy of falling off her. Personally, I always found her to be a little too seedy for my taste, but to each his own. And anyway, that was just her screen persona. I’ve read countless biographies and memoirs of other movie stars who have named her as a sweet, timid girl off the screen. To quote her famous off-screen line: “Men fell in love with Gilda and woke up next to me.”
Anyway, back to Gilda, which is how everyone thinks of Rita anyway. She’s a bad girl nightclub singer and wife to cruel and stern George Macready. When Glenn gets hired to work directly under George in the club, he has no idea his old girlfriend Rita is now married to his boss! Because of the danger of crossing George, Glenn insists he and Rita have to act like they’ve never met. But do you think Rita wants it that way? Do you think she might like danger and forbidden love? Part noir, part romance, part striptease, this movie is a classic. To each his own, but I prefer Fallen Angel.
