Gulliver's Travels (2010)
There have been many adaptations of the classic story Gulliver’s Travels, but my favorite has to be the Jack Black version. It’s so sweet, and very funny, too. In this modern setting, Jack stars as a travel writer who accidentally winds up on the wrong island. Although he’s dressed in Bermuda shorts and sandals, the little people of Liliput wear suits of armor and royal looking gowns. It’s a funny contrast, and it makes the plot relatable to modern audiences and children.
Jason Segal and Emily Blunt are the little romantic leads, and as Jack helps prove his worth on the island, he also helps them get together. While encouraging another unlikely romance, he gains courage and confidence to approach his crush at work, Amanda Peet – how adorable is that pairing? With familiar faces like Billy Connolly, James O’Dowd, and James Corden, you know you’re in for a laugh a minute. If your kids just can’t find interest in the original text, set them up in front of the movie and they’ll get a lot more out of it.
