Hangman's Knot (1952)
Led by Army major Randolph Scott, a group of Confederate soldiers successfully attack a stagecoach protected by Union troops. Twelve men are killed, and the trunk full of gold is confiscated, but when the men find out the Civil War has been over for a month, they’re suddenly outlaws. Scottie has to think fast, and with a greedy posse on his tail, he leads his men—Lee Marvin, Frank Faylen, Claude Jarman, Jr., and Glenn Langan—to a stagecoach outpost and takes hostages to ensure their safety.
Once everyone’s stuck in the outpost, the movie transitions to a tense drama with everyone’s characters planting seeds that later flourish. Donna Reed and her fiancé Richard Denning are hostile towards the Southerners, but Donna’s calling as a nurse compels her to help the injured. Richard comes across as an upstanding gentleman, but underneath his veneer, he’s sneaky and slimy. Coarse Lee Marvin brandishes a quick temper and repeatedly questions Scottie’s authority. If you’re in the mood for an intense fistfight, buckle up. Scottie McScottie Pants won’t let you down. Claude is innocent and has survived his time in the war without having killed anyone, and his heart goes out to one of the hostages, Jeanette Nolan, a woman whose son and husband were killed by Confederates.
Hangman’s Knot is very entertaining. So many westerns in the 1950s were lousy and boring, with predictable plots and one-dimensional characters. This one will keep you on the edge of your seat as twists and turns surprise you, and the characters will make lasting impressions as they keep your attention from start to finish. If you liked Stagecoach, another great drama with differing personalities stuck together in an outpost, you’ll love Hangman’s Knot.
