Haul Out the Holly (2022)
Middle-aged Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis suffer from empty nest syndrome when their adult daughter leaves home. Rather than celebrate with all the traditional Christmas cheer, they decide to skip the holiday and save themselves both heartache and money. Christmas decorations, presents, and parties are expensive! Unfortunately, their suburban neighbors take Christmas very seriously and won’t stand for their lack of cheer. With familiar faces of Dan Akroyd, Austin Pendleton, Felicity Huffman, M. Emmet Walsh, Caroline Rhea, Cheech Marin, and more, it might seem like a shoe-in for Tim and Jamie Lee to soften and give in to the Christmas spirit. But it isn’t. There’s one ridiculous scheme after another get the “grinches” to decorate and participate in holiday festivities.
I know there are lots of folks who howled with laughter during Christmas with the Kranks, but I just wasn’t one of them. It’s not my style of humor, but give the preview a watch and see if you think it’s funny. I know that lots of folks “take Christmas seriously”, but it’s just too over-the-top to see the suburbanites harassing their neighbors just to get a wreath or tree decorated. After all, if their neighbors were Jewish or Buddhist, or Jehovah’s Witnesses? Would they still bully their neighbors to celebrate their Christian holiday, and if so, I guarantee the audience wouldn’t be expected to laugh about it and root for the non-Christian neighbor to relent.
