Home for Christmas Day (2017)
If you’re looking for a multigenerational Hallmark movie, you might like Home for Christmas Day. Rather than solely focusing on young folks or older folks, this romance features two couples of varying ages. A mother, jaded by her own tragic love story, disapproves when her teenaged daughter falls for a man who’s just enlisted. As he faces deployment over the holidays, they vow to stay in touch through letters and emails.
The young kids are very interesting to watch, and you hope that they’ll find a way to make it work throughout the years. The “older” folks (the adults in their forties) aren’t as interesting – but it has nothing to do with their ages. Catherine Bell and Victor Webster had some pretty depressing energy, almost like it wasn’t a Hallmark movie. I understand that Catherine was trying to embody her character as a widow who wants to spare her daughter some pain, but the dark cloud above her head dampened the mood for the rest of the movie. She and Victor seemed to have more than petty bickering between them, and I couldn’t see them lasting for more than the rest of the season. But if you’re trying to get your teenage kids interested in Hallmark movies, pop this one on and grab a bowl of popcorn – especially if your daughter’s boyfriend just enlisted in the military.
