How to Steal a Million (1966)
You’d think that, given the opportunity to put two of the most beautiful people in Hollywood together, the resulting movie would be the best of the decade. In How to Steal a Million, Peter O’Toole and Audrey Hepburn agreed to act in a subpar comedy for no apparent reason. She plays art forger Hugh Griffith’s daughter (how did that happen?), and Peter plays a professional thief. Audrey doesn’t like her father’s dangerous occupation, but he won’t stop – even at the threat of getting caught by an inspector. In order to save him from ruin and jail, Audrey teams up with Peter to steal an original so Hugh’s recreation will appear genuine.
There are some cute moments, but it’s not nearly as good as it could have been if the two leads picked a different movie. Or, if you’re a glass half full fellow, you could say it’s a much better movie than it would have been if two less glamorous leads been cast. Still, there’s tons of eye candy, and it’s all rather over the top since it’s a 1960s movie. Good for a matinee or a double feature, as long as you’re not expecting too much.
