I Love You Again (1940)
Of all the William Powell and Myrna Loy comedies, I Love You Again is one of the cutest – and since they made fourteen pictures together, that’s a definite compliment. Bill starts the movie as a regular Americana businessman from a small town. He’s as straight and narrow as they come, with no booze, no gambling, and lots of righteousness. While on a cruise ship, he gets hit on the head and wakes up a completely different person. He’s a card shark, a cynical con man, and a boozehound womanizer. Frank McHugh helps nurse him back to health and becomes his faithful sidekick. They learn about the original Boring Bill and discover he’s sitting on a nest egg, if only they can get their hands on it. The plan: pretend to be the businessman for a while, get the bankroll, and skip town. The problem: the businessman falls in love.
Bill’s double takes, facial mugging, and comic timing reminded me of Cary Grant’s. If you like Cary’s type of comedy, you’ll really like Bill in this. In one scene, he shows up while Myrna is on a date with another man and joins them at their table. He wants to dance with Myrna but she won’t, so he stands and starts dancing by himself. It’s quite a spectacle, so she joins him to make him stop. “Where’d you learn to dance like this?” she asks, since he’s quite different than he was before. “By mail,” he answers with a straight Cary-Grant-esque face.
With the exception a long-in-the-tooth Boy Scouts scene, this movie is very funny and quick. It’s a laugh a minute, with witty repartee and snappy characters that think faster than the audience, keeping them on their toes. Myrna once again is dressed to the nines by designer Adrian. I love her outfits! If you want to see another old movie with a similar setup, check out Brian Aherne in the following year’s The Man Who Lost Himself. But you can just stick with I Love You Again. It's very cute, and though similar to Nick Charles’s character, Bill is much funnier and more likable in this one.
