I Take You
by Eliza Kennedy
Not for old fashioned audiences or younger folks, I Take You is a hilarious, modern novel about a woman unable to commit to her fiancé in the days approaching their wedding. Written in first person, we read her innermost thoughts, as well as her lightening-fast thought process as she buries her feelings and fears with alcohol and casual flirtations. If you’re reading it purely for entertainment purposes, it’s truly delightful. I laughed more than once during every page, and I fell in love with every character, awkward or outrageous as they seemed. If you’re reading it as a cautionary tale, it’s very effective. Too often, people in the modern age don’t want to face their feelings, but instead cover up with a witty remark and an overdone gesture excused by alcohol.
This book is very well-written, as we see how she interprets her actions and continues to lie to herself, while the reader can slowly understand her. As someone who has seen her share of brides and grooms not really looking forward to the ceremony, I found the sections including the wedding planner hilarious. Also of note are the legal sections; the protagonist is a lawyer and helps prep a client for testimony in a legal dispute. The author’s intelligence and experience are made clear during these scenes, as are her senses of cunning and manipulation! Highly recommended, if you don’t mind modern humor and sex scenes.
