I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957)
Coupled with I Was a Teenage Werewolf, this drive-in cult classic of the 1950s stars popular character actor Whit Bissell. I’ve seen him in so many movies, and I was very happy for him to receive first billing and take center stage as the lead. He lectures, he experiments, he’s in charge of the entire plot, and he even has a love interest! His secretary Phyllis Coates has a big crush on him, and when she lets her feelings show, he tells her he’s been trying to court her in the old-fashioned way. He even gets a couple of smooches during his proposal scene! Way to go Whit!
There’s an interesting line in the scene when Whit is constructing Frankenstein’s monster: “I want him to know pain, so that when I alleviate it, he’ll also know gratitude.” That scene is actually quite gruesome by 1957’s standards. Whit and his assistant Robert Burton are shown using a saw on the operating table, and then handling bloody severed limbs.
Whit is pretty much in every scene, and he explains his research thoroughly. Although he is one, he doesn’t come across as a mad scientist. He seems logical, which might make him that much more dangerous. I’m really not the biggest horror fan, so this movie was just my speed. It wasn’t scary or gruesome (by today’s standards), so I didn’t have to hide my face behind a pillow!
