I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957)
Michael Landon’s first starring role was in the drive-in horror flick I Was a Teenage Werewolf. It’s laughable by today’s standards, but back in 1957, it was a huge hit amongst the young audiences. Honestly, I don’t know why, since it’s a tongue-in-cheek B-picture where everyone either overacts or doesn’t act at all. The group of teens are so ridiculous, one can only hope kids didn’t really behave like that back in the 1950s. There’s a terrifying (by that, I mean lousy rather than scary) song “Eeny-Meeny-Miney-Mo” that the teenagers sing and dance to at a party. If you thought Bye Bye Birdie was silly, you’ll probably turn this movie off.
I only sat through it because Whit Bissell was enjoying his time as Star of the Week at Hot Toasty Rag, and the popular character actor’s biggest claim to fame was playing the mad scientists in both this movie and I Was a Teenage Frankenstein. I preferred the latter, since more of the plot focused on the scientist rather than the goofy teens. In this one, he uses a serum and puts Michael Landon under hypnosis to bring out his inner animal. If you’re looking for violence and werewolf-y gore, you won’t find it here. If you’re looking to laugh and eat popcorn, this is more like it. It’s very tame and can be watched by all ages come Halloween.
