Impact (1949)
Brian Donlevy gives another fantastic performance in another undiscovered gem, Impact. It was a highly contentious season during the 1949 Hot Toasty Rag Awards, but he almost made the list of nominees for Best Actor. He plays a cuckold millionaire whose heart gets broken in the very worst way. His wife, Helen Walker (remember how evil she was in Nightmare Alley?), is not only having an affair – but she hires her boyfriend to kill Brian! It’s a very sad and emotional scene when Brian finally finds out.
The title of the film comes from a pivotal scene: a car accident. Brian manages to survive the wreck, but because of the upheaval of his life, he decides to lie low for a while. Instead of returning home, he lets the newspapers report his death. He seeks refuge in a small town and starts a new life where no one recognizes him or knows him. Ella Raines is fresh and sweet, and he enjoys getting to know her. But what happens when detective Charles Coburn starts sniffing around? You’ll have to watch this lovely drama to find out.
