Indiscreet (1958)
There’s a fabulous quote from Indiscreet that puts me in stitches every time I see the movie, but unfortunately, to write it out would spoil the big plot twist. So, you’ll just have to watch the movie.
It stars Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant, and it was reportedly his favorite movie, which is in itself a reason to watch it. She’s a famous actress, he’s a millionaire businessman. They meet by chance through Ingrid’s sister Phyllis Calvert and brother-in-law Cecil Parker. Sparks fly, but there’s a pretty big fly in the ointment: Cary’s married and can’t get a divorce. He tells her everything up front, and she makes the decision as a grown woman that she’ll agree to an affair. She thinks they’re being very mature and discreet, but as time passes, they fall in love. It’s only natural, really. How long can a woman have a casual affair with a married man before her feelings grow stronger?
The plot, as they say, thickens. . . The snappy script will have you laughing from start to finish, and Ingrid is just delightful. Of course, as I always say, the male lead could have been David Niven, but he can’t have acted in every single movie, can he? I’m not Cary’s biggest fan, but I recognize those who are will like him in this movie. If you enjoy Indiscreet, check out Cactus Flower for a similar theme but different story. It also stars Ingrid Bergman!
