Indiscretion of an American Wife (1953)
You’d think with two beautiful people on the screen, Jennifer Jones and Montgomery Clift, you’d see an unforgettable, passionate love story. However, anyone expecting that will be undoubtedly disappointed by Indiscretion of an American Wife. This is not another A Place in the Sun, folks. The two costars didn’t even get along, and the movie got cut to only feature an hour’s worth of running time.
The entire film takes place in a train station in Rome. Jonesy and Monty have been having an affair, and she wants to call it off. But, as Dolly Parton’s song goes, “here he comes again” and she begins to regret her decision to end it. He is very handsome (although, not at all Italian as his character is supposed to be). So, for an hour, she wavers between ending things and continuing the affair. There are lots of emotions, kisses, parting sobs, but it’s not very interesting. Just stick with Madame Bovary or The Heiress to see each actor in a better movie.
