Interiors (1978)
In Woody Allen’s first drama, E.G. Marshall and Geraldine Page’s crumbling marriage affects their three adult children in unforeseen ways. All three daughters, Diane Keaton, Kristin Griffith, and Mary Beth Hurt, have emotional problems, career roadblocks, and troubles with their partners. When E.G. leaves Geraldine and takes up with Maureen Stapleton, Geraldine attempts suicide and all three daughters rally around her.
This is a pretty heavy film, and if you have a particularly dysfunctional family, this might hit too close to home for you to watch. I only rented it because I like Sam Waterston, but he has a very small part as one of the daughters’ boyfriends. Geraldine Page plays an extremely depressed woman, which she can play very well, but it’s pretty sad to watch. On the other hand, you understand why E.G. Marshall would want a break from being married to someone like that—but is it worth the risk of how she might handle the heartbreak?
If you’re intrigued by those situations, you might find the film entertaining or thought-provoking. It was just a little too heavy for me.
