Into the Light
by Aleatha Romig
What a thriller! Before I tell you about Into the Light, I should warn you that it ends with a cliffhanger. There’s a sequel, Away from the Light, that I’m anxious to read, so don’t be surprised that things don’t wind up all neatly tied with a bow in the end.
Normally I don’t like dual narratives, but in this novel, it totally works. One chapter is narrated by a female journalist who’s dating a cop. She’s strong, feisty, and likable, especially since she’s loyally trying to find out what happened to her dear friend who disappeared. The other narrative is another young woman, bandaged from a terrible accident, with total amnesia. She can’t see or speak, and what she hears sounds far more frightening than comforting. “Brother” and “Sister” and “The Commission” float around her ears, making her wonder what kind of world she’s been living in.
If you like books about cults, this is a great thriller for you to read. It’s fast-paced, mysterious, creepy but not too scary to put off scaredy-cat readers like me, and truly interesting. Characters are fully fleshed out, and the obstacles they have to endure are both dramatic and realistic. Even if this doesn’t sound like the type of book you normally read, give it a chance and read the first chapter. It’s very engaging, and you might find a surprising new favorite.
