Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
Poor Kevin McCarthy. In 1951, he was a new face to the silver screen: young, handsome, talented, and playing in the highly dramatic Death of a Salesman. In 1956, he was in the science fiction low-budget flick Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It did seal his fate to be remembered by future generations who love old horror movies, but it was a waste of his talents.
I’m not a horror fan, or a science fiction fan, so I’m not the target audience for this movie. I watched it because it is an old classic, and I took a chance it wouldn’t be too scary. Thankfully, it wasn’t. Kevin poured his heart into the role, but he couldn’t save it from being just a typical drive-in movie from the 1950s. Yes, it’s better quality than The Blob and I Was a Teenage Werewolf, but don’t expect an A-tier drama. Real lovers of horror will also be disappointed that it’s not gruesome like the 1978 remake (in which Kevin McCarthy has a cute cameo). It’s definitely creepy by 1956’s standards, but you won’t see blood and guts in this version. You will see Dana Wynter, Carolyn Jones, Virginia Christine, Larry Gates, Jean Willes, and Whit Bissell in the supporting cast.
